Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, Shuji Nakamura Won 2014 Nobel Prize In Physics

Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano of Japan and Japan-born U.S. scientist Shuji Nakamura won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of blue light-emitting diodes — a new energy efficient and environment-friendly light source. Last year’s physics award went to Britain’s Peter Higgs and Belgian colleague Francois Englert for helping to explain how matter formed after the Big Bang.


Rapid Action Force Celebrates 22nd Anniversary

The 22nd Formation Day of Rapid Action Force (RAF) was celebrated on 7 October with all the senior Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) dignitaries present. It was announced at the Formation Day celebrations that five more battalions of RAF will be set up. The new battalions will be in Guwahati, Siliguri, Patna, Uttar Pradesh and in NCR (National Capital Region). The RAF is a specially trained and equipped wing of the CRPF. It was formed in 1992 to deal with communal riots and civil unrest caused thereby. At present, there are 10 battalions, but it is set to increase as stated above.


 Japan Launches Next-generation Weather Satellite

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Corp. successfully launched the nation’s next-generation Himawari-8 weather satellite on 7 October from the Tanegashima Space Center aboard an H-2A rocket.


Noted German Author Siegfried Lenz Died

Noted german author Siegfried Lenz has died on 7 October 2014. He was 88 years old. His work was translated into more than 30 languages. For his work he bagged many prizes and recognitions, few of them are Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, honorary citizenship of Hamburg and Italian International Nonino Prize.


SCI Launches India-Myanmar Service (IMS)

India Myanmar Service (IMS) Container service was launched by Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCI). It will be operating container services from Chennai to Myanmar. This service is expected to boost the bilateral trade relations between India and Myanmar.
